Artist SpotlightAn interview with Laurie Furnell

What is your family life like? Hubby, kidlets, grandkidlets, animals, etc?
I am married to the love of my life and best friend, Dennis. This year we will be celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary, can't believe it's been that long! We have two great kids...a girl, Shannon, she is married, has one child and another on the way. Our first grand baby, Maekayla, is 15 mo. old. Shannon will soon deliver a baby boy in February. Shannon is in the Army and her little family are stationed at Ft. Stewart, GA. We also have a son, age 17. He's a Junior in High School... Church activities, School, Guitar lessons and a part time job keep him very busy.
What is your work life like?
I don't really consider what I do work....I love to draw, paint and create. I have been doing it all my life. I have been really blessed to be able to be a stay at home mom, do what I love and add to our family finances at the same time. I don't really have an art studio. Many days you can find me at the kitchen table working up the drawing of my latest Creatable. I do have a table downstairs in the corner of the family room where I do all my painting...and I lay my finished artwork out on the pool table, so I can see what I have and what I still need to do. The pool table is covered with a Creatable in progress most all the time...so this year we have plans to finish a studio for me in the unfinished part of our basement...I can't wait to have a space of my own and my husband can't wait to get his pool table back!
What is you favorite art medium to use?
I like to experiment with all kinds of art media, but I mostly use watercolor and acrylics to do the Creatables...One of my favorite things to do is cruise the art dept. of our local craft store. I love to experiment with new art supplies. As a kid my favorite thing was a new box of crayons and a pad of white paper.
Is there a type of art that you have wanted to try, but never have?
What I would really like to do is take some college art classes...I am pretty much a self taught artist and most everything I know was learned by trial and error. I would especially like to learn more about painting in oils and acrylics on canvas.
What is your favorite subject to draw or paint?
I really don't have a favorite subject to draw, I'm willing to try almost anything...But I do like to do cute, whimsical things the best.
Favorite stuff - food, movies, books (author), holidays, hobbies, anything else ya like.
I enjoy cooking special meals for family and friends. My folks were good cooks and I earned everything from them. I especially like cooking during the holidays. I collect cookbooks and like to try out new recipes. Luckily, my guys aren't picky eaters. I like to watch old movies especially on rainy days...one of my favorites is Little Women, the 1949 version, and any other old movie that makes you cry.
Favorite vacation spot - And it might be somewhere you want to go and haven't been yet.
My family and I like to go down to southern Missouri to our state's biggest vacation spot...with amusement parks, music shows and a large lake near by, there is fun for all...but instead of staying in the usual motel room we like to stay in rustic log cabins back in the woods...our favorite time to go is in the early spring when the Dogwoods are blooming and it's still cool enough at night to light a fire in the fireplace and roast marshmallows.
What are your future plans?
I'm going to continue to enjoy my family and watch it grow...grand babies are a wonderful thing, I plan on spoiling them every chance I get. I look forward to many more years working with pcCrafter and the great folks there. It is one of my great blessing in life to be able to work at what I love. I hope to branch out into licensing my designs to a variety of companies ranging from fabric, scrapbooking supplies, calendars etc...most importantly, I am looking forward to another 30 years with my eternal sweetheart and I can't wait to see what the future holds.
Final thoughts....
Take time to stop and smell the flowers...Life is too short to use it up fussing over the small stuff...Be brave and follow your dreams, even if you fail, you will never regret that you tried! Last, but not least.... tell your family you love them everyday!
